Arabs and Turkey

Many, successive and complex changes have been raging in the Arab world in recent years, beginning with what was termed the Arab Spring, followed by violent political reversals and coups that shook the region and made it unstable for many Arab citizens.

As a result of these crises, large numbers of Arabs have resorted to Turkey, seeking security and safety and in search of a stable place to work.

Although Turkey has received millions of Syrian refugees and embraced them on its lands, it has also opened its arms to Arab businessmen and wealthy people to bring their wealth and money and invest it in Turkey. The Turkish parliament moved quickly, as it legislated a draft law for foreigners' work in order to benefit from the foreign labor, and observers considered that it came in response to the demand of civil society in order to attract the talents that were forced to leave their countries.

The Turkish government encourages Arab and foreign investors to set up companies in Turkey, set up factories, own property and set up projects, and even the right to obtain citizenship. The Turkish government issued a new law on September 19, 2018, regarding real estate ownership for foreigners, where the new law stipulated allowing foreigners to obtain Turkish citizenship in exchange for their entry into real estate investments in Turkey with a minimum of 250.000 US dollars, while before the amount was one million US dollars . Ankara encourages investment in the real estate sector, after it attracted several companies from the Arab Gulf countries, and provided in parallel advantages and facilities for those who invest or buy homes in Turkey, after the real estate market witnessed significant growth, especially after the change of the property law for foreigners in 2012, which allowed them to own property.

The Turkish government will grant Turkish citizenship to foreigners in the following cases:

  • For people who bought a property worth 250 thousand dollars on the condition that they do not sell it for three years
  • For people who invest half a million dollars
  • For people who have bank deposits of at least half a million dollars, provided that they remain in the bank for 3 years
  • For people who buy borrowing bonds from the state on the condition that they are not sold for three years
